Looks Like A Job For The Federal Government

The NFL, MLB, and The NHL take note, the Fed is coming:

Professional boxing in the US is set to undergo a major change after the Senate approved new legislation to create a federal agency to oversee the sport.

The move is part of a campaign to protect youngsters coming into the sport, the actions of promoters and the independence of judges. Among a range of schemes to be introduced will be a new licensing system applying to boxers, managers, promoters and sanctioning bodies.

The new agency - the US Boxing Adminstration - will also regulate the major TV networks when they act as fight promoters.

And just who is behind this:

The bill was the brainchild of Senator John McCain, a long time supporter of reform in the sport.

I’m shocked, absolutely positively shocked that one of the men behind McCain-Lieberman would be in favor of regulating a private enterprise.  blank stare

Didn’t See This Coming

Farewell to a genuine legend

Bob Knight retires from Texas Tech.

I don’t condemn or condone the man’s actions over the years.  He is what he is, and that’s it.

Nominal GOP Senator Wants Goodell To Testify

Nice to see all those other pressing problems that need addressing got worked out...

Arlen Specter wants NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on “Spygate”:

The ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee wants N.F.L. Commissioner Roger Goodell to explain why the league destroyed evidence related to spying by the New England Patriots.

New England Coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 by the N.F.L. after the Patriots were caught stealing defensive signals.

In the stretch of 12 days, from Sept. 9 to Sept. 20, the Patriots were caught filming the Jets’ defensive signals in violation of N.F.L. rules, ordered to hand over all tapes of illegal filming to the league office, fined $750,000 and made to forfeit a first-round draft pick.

Then the N.F.L. announced it had destroyed the evidence.

In a telephone interview Thursday morning, Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania and ranking member of the committee, said that Goodell would eventually be called before the committee to address two issues: the league’s antitrust exemption in relation to its television contract and the destruction of the tapes that revealed spying by the Patriots.

“That requires an explanation,” Specter said. “The N.F.L. has a very preferred status in our country with their antitrust exemption. The American people are entitled to be sure about the integrity of the game. It’s analogous to the C.I.A. destruction of tapes. Or any time you have records destroyed.” (emphasis mine)

Okay, what in hell is going on?

It’s still about midway through the second quarter, with six minutes until halftime.

I watch the SuperBowl for the commercials. I didn’t even know who was playing until my wife told me yesterday, and so far, I’m not only not impressed, I am actually disinterested in them after the moronic failures they have offered so far.

I mean, heart disease? Black History Month? The pretend Dalmatian? The suicidal robot?

Jeez. I know it’s raining this evening in Miami, but these things were created weeks ago, and they uniformly suck.

Yum Yum Klum

I always enjoy optical illusions.

But these will get you in trouble if you are at work.

Watching the ‘Lympics

In case you’ve been living under a rock or something over the last few days, the 2006 Winter Olympics are going on…

A few points:

1. Bob Costas needs to be bound and gagged and left on the side of a snowy mountain somewhere. His voice is becoming more than just mildly annoying.

2. It’s a shame that Michelle Kwan couldn’t compete. She deserves one more shot.

3. I also feel a little bad about Apolo Ohno, but he tried to pass when he didn’t need to (they would have taken the top 2 and he was in a strong 2nd place with about 10 seconds left in the race), and paid the price for it, ending up losing control and finishing 4th.

4. Shawn “The Flying Tomato” White on the men’s Halfpipe competition continues to set the standard, and it was mildly disappointing that we couldn’t sweep the medals as we did in SLC four years ago.

5. I’m looking forward to the hockey games…

Feel free to comment.

While we’re at it

You’ve gotta be kidding me.

I’m struck almost speechless by this, wherein is described an Islamic fatwa against football (soccer).

No, I’m deadly serious.

To quote a few of them:

3. Do not follow the heretics, the Jews, the Christians and especially evil America regarding the number of players. Do not play with 11 people. Add to this number or decrease it.

***

6. Do not play in two halves. Rather, play in one half or three halves in order to completely differentiate yourselves from the heretics, the corrupted and the disobedient.

***

9. You should spit in the face of whoever puts the ball between the posts or uprights and then runs in order to get his friends to follow him and hug him like players in America or France do, and you should punish him, for what is the relationship between celebrating, hugging and kissing and the sports that you are practising?

Sounds like a whole lot of fun to me… Or maybe “fun” is not permitted under Islam?

Sore losers

Want to know why I don’t gamble? Here’s one reason.

Angry gamblers threw two hand grenades into a crowd at a cockfight in western Mexico, killing four men and seriously injuring at least 11 others, authorities said Monday.

TV images showed doctors wrapping bandages around the bloody limbs of the victims of the late-night attack in the tequila-making state of Jalisco.

“Two men died at the cockfight and two more died in nearby hospitals,” said Jose Ramirez, spokesman for the Jalisco Attorney General’s office. “It appears that some men lost money and then they lost control.”

Local media reported that shots were also fired at the cockfight in the town of Tonala, just outside the state capital, Guadalajara. About 300 people attended the fight.

And these are the same people that your local leftists want to open our borders to.

An amusing possibility

Could the Democrats be shooting themselves in the groin by being pro-abortion? John Hawkins puts together a few points and presents it as a very real possibility.

...Has the Roe effect borne itself out in practice? The results are mixed. In terms of reapportionment, the trend is decidedly in favor of Republican states. The 30 states George W. Bush carried in 2000 had 271 electoral votes, a bare majority. Reapportionment after the 2000 census increased that number to 278. In the 1980s, they were worth only 267 electoral votes, not enough for a majority; in the 1970s, 260. The trend continues: Of the 10 fastest-growing states in 2003-04, Bush carried nine in 2004. (One of them, New Mexico, went for Al Gore four years earlier.”—James Taranto

WRESTLEMANIA!!

I am a professional wrestling fan.

I have been for a long, long time.  Since the WWWF/Georgia Championship Wrestling days....since the great Gordon Solie graced the programming of the Superstation at 7:00 PM EST, Saturday night.  I actually ran a wrestling website (which no longer exists) and wrote columns for what I will always believe to be the best professional wrestling website on the web...Solie’s Vintage Wrestling, and for the best wrestling fan, Earl, who’s labor of love created the site, and fired my interest again in the industry.

Back then (the late 70’s and early 80’s), the stars were Ric Flair, Tommy ‘Wildfire’ Rich, Dusty Rhodes, the Masked Superstar and Super Destroyer, Abdullah the Butcher, Terry Funk...and, in the NE of the nation, Ivan Putski, Superstar Billy Graham, Stt. Slaughter, Pedro Morales, and that ilk.  They were the people that played in the ring.....Don Muraco, and Jimmy Snuka, and the Von Erichs...it was the five-year period before the Rock and Wrestling times of Hulk Hogan and Cyndi Lauper....in my opinion, a glorious time.

Well, I watched wrestling, and when I was introduced to the Internet, had the distinct honor of writing columns on wrestling....I wrote hundreds of columns on the subject, and I have a love for the traditions, and a respect for the men and women who work their spots.

So, to that end, I would like to give you the John Cross Take on Wrestlemania 21!!

So It Begins

The final point of a long, hard fought out season. Lord Football’s penultimate game of this season (yeah, the Pro Bowl is last) happens today…

FOUR and HALF HOURS from now....whaaaa? Who was the first producer who thought this was a great idea?

Any predictions or thoughts? I have a feeling that the vaunted defenses of both teams might collapse tonight.

Cruddy Sunday

When I arose on Sunday, I watching television and going through my usual routine. I flipped to Fox Pre-Game show and heard Flaptop Howie Long talking about Reggie White. Usually when you hear them talking like this, something has happened.

Unfortunately, they were talking about the death of Reggie White.

Being a Packers fan, I saw what this man did up close. I recall him tossing a runningback aside like a rag doll. I recall him getting three sacks in Super Bowl 31. I recall his voice and the way he carried himself off the field.

Along with Brett Favre, he was the reason why this state celebrated a Super Bowl win for the first time in almost 30 years.

NBA: I’m Through with you

I’ve really seen enough.

David Stern can smile all he wants, but it’s a worthless game right now. High school and college basketball are at least fun to watch. What’s so fun about watching a bunch of dunking thugs? Oh yeah, and the riveting 81-79 shootouts between two pro teams...yeahhhh, that’s exhilarating.

Give me Football, Baseball and NASCAR. Now that’s a new big three of sports.

What’s Worse?

The fact the Red Sox won the World Series (in one of the most boring WS I’ve seen) and their fans can no longer use “The Curse” if anything goes wrong for them...or

The fact that John Kerry can gloat over this with that goofy smile of his.

Maybe the latter isn’t so bad, since more pictures of Lurch smiling and gloating will turn off people. Maybe…

Take heart Yankee fans…

At least you’re not Chicago Cubs fans…

I heard this on the radio last year after the Cubs playoff debacle (Bartman, Bartman) and it puts the fortunes of those loveable losers into perspective.

It’s a roller coastser ride where all the Cubs fans know how the ride is going to end...it always comes to a screeching halt. It wasn’t the fan’s fault they lost...this poor man was just the vessel that fate had chosen to use to visit its latest and most outrageous hurt on Cubs fans. Had he not done it, someone else would have. It was DESTINY.

It was the starters pistol shot for all the furies of the sports gods to come riding into Wrigley on their steeds of vengeance. Gonzalez’ bobble, Prior, Farnsworth...it doesn’t matter....they were meant to lose. They never had a chance.

So you see, it’s not all bad....at least you don’t have stupid goat curse or something like that hanging over your franchise.
