Breaking Alito News
I’ll update in a bit (I have to get home) but CNN is reporting that John Kerry is calling for a fillibuster on Samuel Alito. It isn’t even a linkable story yet.
I will update as this progresses.
Update(4:37 EST): Here’s a link, thanks to Drudge. Kerry is obviously responding to the Angry Left and the New York Times editorial page from this morning...which may be one and the same.
Update(4:50) Real Clear Politics has it up as well. I’m looking for some punditry from them as well...they are sharp as a tack on these things. UPDATE (6:08): And, HERE IT IS!!
If I can comment.....this looks everything like Kerry trying to build momentum for a possible ‘08 run. He would not do this unless he were trying to call attention to himself from the hard left. Note that even though Hillary does not support Alito, she isn’t making the move to fillibuster him. If it would have been helpful for her aspiration to do that, she would have been the first in line to call for the fillibuster. Now that Kerry’s thrown the gauntlet, so to speak, it will be interesting who sides with him. The article says that Kerry claims Kennedy, and several others (though not listed by name) have sided with him. Also note that he made his proclaimation from Switzerland, and not on the Senate floor.
We’ll see.
Update (5:01) STOP THE ACLU has made an entry on the subject, with a link in his column to The Political Teen
Update (5:13): Michelle Malkin is all over it.
Update (5:24): Since three Democratic Senators have come out in support of Alito....Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota...there is only the need to get two more to break the fillibuster (if it comes to that). Also, with Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu coming out against the filibuster, I can’t see Democratic success here. This is a definite break between Kerry and the more moderate (electable) part of the Democratic Party.
Update (5:47): Polipundit is on the air with a link, and a pretty fitting comment.
Update (6:01): So is RightWinged.com
Update (6:10): Fox News is on this...finally. I don’t have to keep hitting CNN for updates. OK...good. I expect some commentary will come later from this very website. I hope some links come over, and we get some new readers. If you are here from a link, welcome!! Stay and read awhile.
