BREAKING NEWS
Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination for the Supreme Court. Bush used an out (the fact that he would not turn over White House Counsel documentation to the Senate) to have this happen, but it is done.
Astute in a political sense, but I think that he had this out for about a week or so....it was projected from several senators on the Committee that they would be asking for these documents, and that was a pretty obvious statement to POTUS.
Now, he needs to bring in a Janice Rogers Brown, or someone of her ilk. He needs to go on the offensive, and get the ball back in his hands.
This also shows that there is still a strong CONSERVATIVE movement in these United States...apart from the religious conservatives. Harriet was a Religious Republican....and this is a shot across Bush’s bow from the conservatives that helped elect his moderate self back to the office. This is a clear message...it says that we like his War on terror, but that the moderate leaning has to stop at some point.
I’d hit Polipundit and Real Clear Politics for updates, though I’ll try to post some as updates here.
I’m going to make this sticky for a few hours....I’ll de-stick-ify it at around noon EDT
Comment on this!
Update: This was the Krauthammer Option, as explained by the good mariner at Captain’s Quarters.
Update #2: Andrew Sullivan says, of course, that this is a bad thing, and confirms everything bad that he believes about the President.
Update #3: True conservative-intelligent-blogging superstar (and not so harsh on the eyes) Michelle Malkin has a very complete post on the subject.
Further Updates Below:
Update #4: Hugh Hewitt is not pleased with the situation. He feels and thinks it is patently unfair. I can understand....but only insofar as the fact that if she would NOT have pulled out, she should have been given a fair hearing before the Senate. I would argue to Mr. Hewitt that those people that voted for the President in 2004 needed to be heard....and they were.
Update #5: Ann Althouse seems relieved and expectant on who’s next.
Update #6: Kos is upset about this.....but I can’t be sure. However, that should tell us all something.....
Update #7: Citizen Smash says, “Um....so? Who’s next?”
Update #8: The Blogfaddah has spoken, relief is apparent. He has links as well. Money quote: “That Miers wasn’t up to those standards is no discredit to her, as very few lawyers are. But it is a discredit to the White House, which nominated her. Now it’s a do-over, and they’d be well-advised not to blow it.”
#9: Decision ‘08 is hitting on all cylinders (all eight, of course)
#10: LaShawn Barber says the same things I do...she’s so SMART!!

I’m tempted to think that this has been the plan all along. The timing is going to force the Senate to fast-track the next nomination or remain at work beyond Nov. 19th. Nearly all of the Republicans will accept the next person by default, and the Dems lack the will to put up much of a fight.
Bush will say “Well, this nominee is so much more qualified than Miers, isn’t that what you wanted?” and he’ll redeem himself among the conservtives by getting in a good strong right winger. That’s my take.
That and this.
